"The subject of domestic abuse is one which is often unseen, by society, by those who suffer or even those who perpetrate violence and abuse. Often it can appear that society is silent when we should be confronting violence and abuse that happens behind closed doors. This project serves to highlight the physical and emotional suffering that people experience while trying to remain sensitive to the difficult subject matter.

The inspiration for using models came from an interest in the Chapman’s works “Hell” and “Fucking Hell”. Knowing that I wanted to work with models I started to look at prefabs with which I could create images from. After searching and failing to find anything I thought I could use I chose to make my own.

My first thoughts on the models were for them to look as realistic as possible in order to make the abuse as real as possible for the viewer. As I created the models and shot them for tests it became apparent that creating slightly twisted caricatures rather than realistic models would make the images easier to look at while still maintaining a sense of violence and despair which the viewer could empathise with."
